DTU Space conducts research into the use of GPS and similar global satellite systems for positioning and navigation.

It is important to know the strengths and weaknesses of the different systems so they can be used correctly. Among other things, the Institute develops new methods to improve the accuracy of measurements. Researchers at DTU Space examine the effects of variations in atmospheric conditions, for example the effects of variations in solar activity on the ionosphere. The Institute also carries out research into the use of GPS together with different forms of wireless communication, among other things for use in the transport sector.


DTU Space also conducts studies into the use of GPS in climate research. As ice melts, parts of the continental bedrock begin to rise, and this can be measured using GPS. By carrying out exact measurements of the degree to which the bedrock has risen, it is possible to calculate how much ice has melted.


Finally, DTU Space collects data from permanent GPS stations in Greenland, thus contributing towards international projects seeking to improve the quality of GPS measurements.
