Global warming is hitting hard in Greenland and the Arctic

The Arctic, and with it Greenland, is the fastest-warming region on Earth. At the same time, European temperature records are edging closer to the Arctic and the Arctic Circle. These are among the findings of the European State of the Climate 2025 report, published earlier this year with contributions from DTU Space.

The effects of climate change are clearly felt north of the Arctic Circle. In Ilulissat, January set a new January temperature record with an average temperature of -1.6°C. Facts

  • European State of the Climate 2025 was published in 2026 by the Copernicus Climate Change Service on behalf of the European Commission, in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), with contributions from DTU Space.

  • DTU Space is active across a wide range of research and technology fields in the Arctic, particularly in Greenland. These include research into sea ice, the Greenland Ice Sheet and glaciers, and sea level in response to melting ice. The work is based on field studies and data collected from monitoring stations on the ice, as well as measurements and observations from aircraft and satellites.

  • DTU Space also provides advisory services, contributions to education, research and monitoring relevant to defence, search and rescue, and security in Greenland and the Arctic. In addition, the institute is involved in space research in the region, including work related to the Greenland Telescope.
