A Digital Twin of the Earth is taking shape with assistance from DTU

Using artificial intelligence, supercomputers and vast amounts of satellite data, researchers at DTU Space are well underway in developing their contribution to the EU's digital replica of the Earth, which will enable researchers and decision-makers to predict the impacts of climate change and test solutions before they are implemented in the real world.

Facts

  • Destination Earth (DestinE) is the European Union's flagship initiative to develop a digital twin of the Earth. The aim is to deliver a fully operational digital twin by 2030. Through the Digital Europe Programme, the EU has allocated around 500 million euro (approximately DKK 3.8 billion) to the programme during its current development phase.

  • The project aims to create a virtual environment in which researchers, public authorities and decision-makers can simulate the impacts of, among other things, climate change and test different scenarios.

  • The project is being delivered jointly by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European satellite organization EUMETSAT.

  • DTU Space conducts research and develops technology across a wide range of Arctic disciplines, with a particular focus on Greenland. Activities include research into sea ice, the Greenland Ice Sheet, glaciers and sea level. Climate change is monitored through field campaigns, ground-based monitoring stations, airborne surveys and satellite observations.

  • DTU Space also develops technologies for satellite-based Earth observation and works on navigation, communications, emergency preparedness, as well as research, monitoring and advisory services relevant to civilian, defence and security-related activities in Greenland and the Arctic. DTU Space is also involved in traditional space science and technology development projects that involve Greenland.
