Tides can be mapped much more locally using a new method based on satellite images

A new study with contributions from DTU Space could pave the way for more localized tidal models and better forecasts. The method could provide us with a better understanding of remote areas such as Greenland.

  1. Thousands of images are combined. Landsat images spanning more than 40 years provide a long time series that researchers use to deduce local variations in tides. The coastline is visible in the satellite images. Researchers determine the boundary between land and water in images taken at different times.
  2. The movement of the shoreline is measured. As the water level rises or falls, the boundary between land and water shifts across the beach.
  3. The slope of the beach is taken into account. By combining the location of the coastline with information about the beach’s slope, researchers can use trigonometry to calculate the change in water level.
